If you are looking at this website you are probably wondering if your baby could benefit from seeing a Canberra Baby Chiropractor. You may have already sought professional advice and been told that your baby is fine, but intuitively you know something is wrong. We know that you know your baby better than anyone else. You know when something is not quite right and you know when something needs further attention. You may have seen your GP, your maternal health nurse, or another specialist, but so far nothing has worked. Chiropractic for your baby may just be what you are looking for.

Why might a baby need Chiropractic?

Many people question why babies receive Chiropractic care. They think that because they are so little and young that they shouldn’t need Chiropractic. However, whether you have large spine or a tiny little spine, if that spine is creating nerve distress than our bodies cannot operate smoothly.

Our nervous system is the master controller of our body. It communicates to every single part of the body telling it what to do whilst at the same time sending information back to its boss, the brain! In babies, it is the nervous system that drives development. If these communication channels become a bit fuzzy and distorted then our bodies experience all sorts of havoc. Now this makes sense for an adult but how do little babies get nerve irritation?

When we think about the development in utero as well as the birth process, we can see that your little one has been through a lot! In utero your baby may have been cramped up inside the womb or tucked up in an awkward position, depending on how much space they had. Then after your child has been kept up in the womb, they went through the birthing process. They may have been born vaginally or via a C-section, both of which are a huge ordeal for your little baby to go through. All of these things can affect your child’s spine and therefore may cause irritation to their nervous system.

Nerve irritation can cause much havoc in a baby’s body and many parents in Australia and around the world bring their baby to a paediatric Chiropractor when they need help with:

  • Restricted neck movement
  • Torticollis
  • Flatness over one side of the head (Plagiocephaly)
  • Inconsolable crying or an unsettled baby
  • Feeding issues due to jaw or neck restrictions
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia or floppy baby)
  • Crawling, rolling over, or other movement difficulties or delays
  • Poor head control
  • General check up of their neurological development

Is Chiropractic really safe for babies?

This is a BIG yes! Chiropractic for babies is safe when you visit a qualified and reputable paediatric Chiropractor. You can then expect that your paediatric Chiropractor will treat your child safely and gently.

What can I expect for my babies first session?

During your first visit we run through a detailed history of your child and then perform an in-depth assessment. Don’t worry though our assessment is non-invasive and very gentle on your baby. After this we determine whether Chiropractic may help your baby and discuss treatment options. Techniques used will vary depending on the age of your baby. The techniques we use for an adult, a 14-year-old and a 4-month-old are all very different.

Some techniques we may use on your child include:

  • Low force, non-cracking adjustments (using equipment such as an activator, blocks or a drop piece table)
  • Gentle holds
  • Cranial therapy
  • Stretches
  • Home exercises or games to play at home
  • Supplements and basic nutritional advice

Seeing your child in pain is hard which is why we do all we can to make sure you understand what is going on. We make sure we explain in detail what we are doing and why we are doing it, as well as demonstrate what we will be doing before we even touch your child. We want you to be comfortable with your child’s treatment which is why we will only treat what you give the thumbs up to!

Treatment of your baby always has the same goal in mind and that is to remove any irritation on the nervous system. We want your child to have a fully functional, healthy nervous system so that they can grow and develop in a beautiful way.

Will treatment hurt my baby?

We make sure your baby is comfortable during their appointment

When we adjust a baby it is very different from the way we adjust an adult. Babies spines are very flexible and therefore don’t require the pressure we use on adults. The pressure placed on their joints is no more than you would use to press on your own eyeball (A lot of parent’s comment ‘is that it?”). Babies need to be treated gently which is why at Hawker Chiropractic our paediatric chiropractor use suitable techniques for your baby’s age group.

If you think that paediatric Chiropractic would be beneficial to your child or if you have any questions about how chiropractic care for children works then please don’t hesitate to call us.

We are open 6 days a week with appointments available early mornings and late evenings. We are also registered with all health funds so that you can get a refund.
